Washington College

Washington College is a small, private liberal-arts college in Chestertown, MD with an enrollment of about 1,450 students. The College's building portfolio includes several historically important buildings plus many newer structures, including construction as recent as 2016, with two more buildings to be added in 2018-2019.  Approximately half of the building stock is residential, while the remainder is dominated by classrooms and administrative space. Research space and athletics facilities make up slightly more than 10% of the campus portfolio.

Washington College recently hired its first-ever Director of Sustainability, who is tasked with initiating and overseeing energy efficiency efforts on campus. The College plans to pursue campus-wide energy efficiency measures including upgrading and recommissioning building control systems, re-establishing preventative maintenance procedures and a culture of care for the existing physical plant, and executing continuous commissioning for existing buildings and occupants. The College also plans to encourage faculty, staff, and students, over 85% of whom reside on campus, to be wiser energy consumers.  In pursuit of these projects, Washington College will investigate an energy services contract, as well as off-site renewable electricity generation.  Efficiency measures currently in place include geothermal HVAC loops on 6 buildings and a recent campus-wide LED lighting retrofit.
