Sprint has extensive operations throughout the United States and in three of the U.S. territories — U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Guam. With approximately 40,000 employees and a network that serves more than 55 million customers, Sprint's operations are significant, and the company places a critical importance on minimizing its environmental impact.
Sprint’s 200-acre Overland Park, Kansas campus is one of the most environmentally responsible campuses in the country. It was designed with the environment and employees in mind. Sprint has secured 5 percent of its total energy use from renewable energy – wind, solar, geothermal, hydrogen fuel cells, just to name a few, and consistently ranks within the top 15 on the EPA 2012 Green Power Partner list for Fortune 500 companies. Sprint’s greenhouse gas reduction strategy relies primarily on reducing energy consumption but also on increasing use of renewable energy. As a large corporation with thousands of locations throughout the U.S., Sprint is actively engaged in making a difference.
Due to the nature of business at Sprint, 87 percent of electricity consumption by Sprint derives from the Sprint Network. With a focus on new technologies, Sprint developed the Network Vision Plan which includes the decommissioning of 22,000 cell sites and 48 wireless switch facilities. Network Vision will continue to enable energy efficiencies through IP based networking and service “layering” using the Network’s 800, 1900, and 2500 MHz spectrum while supporting future wireless technology advances. The Network Vision program has reduced its energy intensity more than threefold to 0.71 MWh / per Terabit by year end 2012 with additional efficiency expected through program completion. Even though the Sprint Data Center portfolio includes six core data centers with business growth demands, over the past six years, Sprint has reduced its data center energy consumption by 10.73 percent and expects to reach the company-wide total target energy use reduction goal of 20 percent for by 2017. Sprint has reduced its energy consumption in offices, call centers and labs by 26 percent, driven by space planning and operational strategies. In addition, Sprint Retail Store Operations have reduced energy consumption by 24 percent through a combination of an energy management system in 2012, and retro-fitting existing lighting with LED and portfolio optimization.
