PORTFOLIO ENERGY PERFORMANCE

Better Buildings, Better Plants Challenge partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI), and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. UTC's scope is comprised of 108 facilities, including 100 manufacturing plants. The company is a founding member of the Better Plants Program and stepped up to the Challenge Level in 2014 after meeting its 25% energy intensity reduction target ahead of schedule. It set a new goal of an additional 17.5% energy intensity improvement by 2020 from a 2013 baseline. In 2018 UTC realized a 10.7% reduction in energy consumption from 2017.

ENERGY PERFORMANCE BY FACILITY

All United Technologies sites follow a strict protocol with respect to energy management. Sites are required to track energy consumption, identify significant energy users and create a prioritized list of energy conservation projects that will contribute to goal attainment. A number of UTC sites in 2018 implemented projects including building envelope, LED Lighting, HVAC upgrades and expanded use of local equipment and building automation systems. Many projects are a direct result of energy audits required by UTC to be conducted every three to five years and sites using energy best management practices identifed by UTC.

METHOD FOR CALCULATING ENERGY PERFORMANCE

United Technologies (UTC) is a diversified company that provides a broad range of high-technology products and services to the global aerospace and building systems industries. UTC’s commercial businesses are Otis elevators and escalators and UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a leading provider of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, fire and security systems, building automation and controls. UTC’s aerospace businesses includes Pratt & Whitney aircraft engines and UTC Aerospace Systems aerospace products. Because of the diversity of its operations, UTC calculates energy intensity at the corporate level with total MMBTU divided by total revenue, adjusted for inflation.

WATER PERFORMANCE: SUMMARY

United Technologies a Better Plants Water Savings partner has a goal to decrease portfolio-wide fresh water use 25% in absolute terms compared to a set baseline. UTC water and other freshwater is metered and included in the target. Rain water and recycled process waste water is not metered nor included in the target. Percent improvement is calculated from change in absolute numbers. UTC has 109 manufacturing facilities in the program. UTC has exceeded its 2017 5% goal with an impressive 14.5% reduction from a 2015 baseline.
