Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. Pharmavites’ portfolio consists of 2 manufacturing, 1 bottling, and 1 warehouse facilities and almost 900 thousand square feet. Pharmavite has improved energy performance by 6.9% from a 2015 baseline, making progress towards a goal of 25% by 2025. Energy savings have been achieved by implementing recommendations from Kaizen events including implementing a building management system with improved heating/cooling strategy, adding master control system for their steam generators & LED lighting in their facilities. They have also completed smaller projects with a positive impact to their energy use.

ENERGY PERFORMANCE BY FACILITY

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all facilities can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy.  One of Pharmavite’s production facilities has already achieved almost 9% savings.  Its packaging facility has also improved by almost 9%.  By closing two older warehouse facilities in favor of a newer, Pharmavite has reduced its warehouse energy intensity by almost 20%.  

Method for Calculating Energy Performance

Pharmavite uses the Department of Energy's EnPI tool to normalize energy data for each facility, allowing Pharmavite to account for variations in production and weather. Pharmavite produces several types of vitamins and minerals (i.e., tablets, gummies, soft gel), additionally, production facilities require intense climate control for its production facilities, resulting in a significant baseload. The energy use and absolute change in use are tracked for each facility on both monthly and annual basis.  These metrics are rolled up to the corporate level, with a corporate-wide percent improvement in energy intensity calculated by taking a weighted average of the percent change in energy intensity at the individual facilities.
