Darigold's portfolio consists of 11 plants as of year ending 2015. Their energy management program emphasizes use of an internally-developed plant energy program assessment process, where facilities are recognized for accomplishing certain established standards.  After implementing many energy efficiency projects, energy intensity improvement is at 13.4%. Improvement in 2015 was up due to mainly to a significant increase in production volume at their largest plant.

ENERGY PERFORMANCE BY FACILITY

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all facilities can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy.  Performance, as measured by energy intensity compared to the baseline year of 2009, has lagged at several facilities due to production decreases or process equipment issues.  However, seven facilities have exceeded 15% improvement in energy intensity, and three of those have improved by over 25%. Darigold's plant assessment process provides for sharing of best practices, so that plants can improve by employing practices used by other Darigold facilities.

METHOD FOR CALCULATING ENERGY PERFORMANCE

Darigold's Ingredient and Consumer Products Divisions include fluid milk, cultured products, milk and whey powder, and cheese products. Darigold calculates energy intensity at the plant level, in terms of source energy consumed (in MMBtus) divided by physical output from each plant measured in either gallons or pounds of dairy input. Relative intensities among the plants vary significantly because the plants make different types of products. Because of this, corporate level energy intensity improvement is calculated by taking a weighted average of the plant level improvement (in percentage terms).
