PORTFOLIO SUMMARY: WHOLE BUILDING DATA BY REPORTING PERIOD

Better Buildings Challenge partners strive to report whole building data for all properties within their portfolio. Often, multifamily partners face an added challenge of collecting data from tenant-paid utility accounts or across large complex campus settings as is the case with Balfour's military portfolio. The Better Buildings Challenge is working with partners and utility companies to improve the data collection and reporting process. While this important work continues, multifamily partners are being recognized for their successes within those properties that are reporting whole building data. Balfour Beatty's portfolio consists of 40 properties and over 50 million sq. ft. Balfour has consistently reported whole building data for 70% of its portfolio over the past 3 years.

PORTFOLIO ENERGY PERFORMANCE

Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. Balfour's portfolio consists of more than 56 properties and 50 million square feet. Partner has improved energy performance by 1.9% from a 2014 baseline, making progress towards a goal of 20% by 2023.  Energy savings have been achieved by leveraging utility efficiency programs that support the use of smart meters, energy coaching, LED and compact fluorescent lighting upgrades, envelope sealing, programmable thermostats, domestic hot water water-saving devices, and smart power strips.

ENERGY PERFORMANCE BY FACILITY

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all facilities can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy.  Balfour Beatty has achieved energy performance improvement of greater than 10% at more than 3 of its properties. There are 8 properties that have experienced an increase in Source EUI.  These properties have been targeted for future energy efficiency improvements.

IDENTIFYING OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVEMENT

Property-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings. Balfour Beatty's portfolio consists of properties with a wide range of baseline EUI values, most of which are from 78 to 127 kBtu/sq. ft. The portion of the portfolio that is currently benchmarked has shown both negative and positive improvement since 2014, with the properties located near or below the 0% axis presenting good opportunities for further savings.
