Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. Parkway Schools' portfolio consists of more than 34 buildings and 3.3 million square feet. Parkway School District has improved energy performance by 18% from a 2015 baseline, making progress towards a goal of 20% by 2025. Energy savings have been achieved by implementing outdoor LED lighting retrofits and dimming controls across all properties. Several schools have had interior LED lighting retrofits and occupancy sensors installed. An HVAC retrocommissioning project has been completed at one middle and one high school in that time. All capital replacement projects are using the ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guidelines for 50% energy reductions in K12 Schools, reaching towards Zero Net Energy standards when possible. Control systems upgrades are underway for buildings with older systems.  In 2019, Parkway Schools is moving forward with the adoption of a ground source heat pump (geothermal) system at one high school, as well as adding 300 kW of rooftop pv solar to an already existing 825 kW.  District wide awareness efforts have also been promoted and student engagment has been initiated in the Sustainable Schools Challenge www.parkwayschools.net/ssc.

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all facilities can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy. Parkway Schools' has achieved energy performance improvement of greater than 6% at 25 of its properties.

IDENTIFYING OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVEMENT

Property-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings. Parkway Schools' portfolio consists of properties with  a wide range of baseline EUI values, most of which are from 100 to 200 kBtu/sq. ft. The majority of properties have shown energy improvement since 2015. The properties located near or below the 0% axis may present good opportunities for further savings.
