Wendium of Florida is First Wendy’s Franchisee to Achieve Energy Goal

After joining the Better Buildings Challenge in 2015, The Wendy’s Company took on the additional task of engaging with its franchisees and encouraged them to set their own Challenge goals. To date, 17 franchisees—representing 3.6 million square feet and more than 1,200 restaurants—followed The Wendy’s Company’s lead and set a goal to achieve a 20 percent energy reduction per transaction across their building portfolios within 10 years.

This year, Wendium of Florida, Inc. (Wendium) became the first Wendy’s franchisee to meet its energy goal—seven years ahead of schedule. Wendium, based in the Miami area, has achieved an energy savings of 21 percent from its 2013 baseline across 6 restaurants representing 18,000 square feet of restaurant space.

“We are excited about this accomplishment and proud to be the first Wendy’s franchise organization to achieve, and exceed, the 20 percent energy reduction goal,” said Raul Dominguez, President of Wendium of Florida. “We entered the Better Buildings Challenge to help better the community, grow our business and improve operations, which will also lead to new opportunities for our franchise organization and our people.”

Wendium has improved energy efficiency by remodeling their restaurants to the new image, changing to LED parking lot lighting, updating their HVAC equipment, installing energy management systems, and applying operational focus on reducing day to day energy use. Wendium also uses its “Three Green’s Strategy” to assess potential projects, asking themselves:

  1. Does it save energy?
  2. Does it reduce repair and maintenance cost?
  3. Does it make the environment for our guests and/or our employees better?

This strategy is proving successful for identifying building improvements across Wendium's portfolio that result in both energy and cost savings.

Wendium’s recent accomplishment is hopefully the first of many similar achievements in the Wendy’s family, as several other franchisees are seeing significant energy savings year-to-year as they participate in the Better Buildings Challenge. The Wendy’s Company is also on track to reach its energy savings goal by 2025, having already reduced energy use by 12 percent in 300 corporate-owned restaurants.
