The Better Buildings Financing Navigator is an online tool developed by the Department of Energy (DOE) that helps public and private sector organizations find financing solutions for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. The tool helps users understand the array of financing solutions for energy projects that are available in the market and easily explore which option may be best for them.
Since its release in December 2016, thousands of users have relied on the Better Buildings Financing Navigator to help them demystify and access financing and dozens of organizations are actively using the tool to educate their stakeholders about energy finance.
Now, DOE is releasing Version 2.0 of the Better Buildings Financing Navigator. This version features a fresh modern design, updated market data and insights, and new content including:
- Renewable energy financing options such as Power Purchase Agreements and Solar Leases
- A smart database of financing providers that can be searched and filtered by the financial products they offer, sectors they serve, technologies they finance, and locations they serve
- A compendium of sector-specific, location-specific, and general financing resources
The Better Buildings Financing Navigator was created to help solve a paradox in the current market: despite demonstrated energy cost savings of at least 20-30% and the low risk nature of investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy, many energy projects do not receive the funding required for implementation. This is due, in part, to poor market information and education regarding financing solutions. Many customers and vendors have an incomplete understanding of the financing options available and how they compare. Investors can also be nervous about trying something new without information on similar projects from a trusted third party.
Developed as part of DOE's Better Buildings Initiative, the Better Buildings Financing Navigator offers unbiased assistance in helping users learn the basics of the energy efficiency and renewable energy financing market, compare financing options/find those that are the best fit, and connect with Better Buildings Financial Allies.
DOE worked with dozens of Better Buildings partners, affiliates, and advisors to develop the initial Better Buildings Financing Navigator and the new Version 2.0. We would like to extend a special thanks to the Financial Allies—market-leading financing companies that have collectively funded more than $12 billion in energy efficiency and renewable energy projects since 2012.
